Las Cuevas del Rodeo – ROJALES
The village of Rojales lies in the centre of the agricultural area of Vega Baja, close to Quesada, and is worth a visit in its own right, being typical of the Spanish villages in the area. However, high up the hill beside the town lies a little gem of a place called Las Cuevas del Rodeo, a complex of cave-houses which, over the last few years has been occupied by an artisan colony with about 20 open as workshops and studios. The occupiers are happy to tell you about the caves´colourful history and, if you´re lucky, you might catch one of the cultural events held there ocassionally, such as the Medieval market. There´s a great little bar there too, perched on the hill with stunning views and live music on Friday nights.
Terra Natura – BENIDORM
Wildlife park/zoo in a beautiful setting divided into four themed areas – Pangea, America, Europe and Asia. There are over 1,500 animals, many in danger of extinction, housed in surroundings as close as possible to their natural habitat with hidden barriers so you can see the animals without bars and fences. As well as the animals there are many species of unusual and rare trees and plants. A great day out for all the family with shows, rides and plenty of things to do and see. Ticket prices vary according to season but are around 23€ for adult day pass and 18€ for children. Close by is the Aqua Natura water theme park, ticket prices 21€/16€. Both parks warrant a full day really but if you are on a budget you can get a combined ticket for both for 29€/23€. Located just off the N332 and well signposted.
Terra Natura/Aqua Natura – MURCIA
Smaller and newer version of the parks in Benidorm, having opened in 2007, and making use of latest technology to give you a great and informative day out at the Zoo with two themed areas, Kenya and the Iberian Peninsula and shows. There and some fantastic rides and shows at the Aqua Park. Located off the A30 Cartegena-Murcia motorway at junction 136 next to the University complex of Espinardo. Ticket prices 16€ adult, 12€ child.
Quad-biking
Plus many other activities including horse-riding, hiking and fishing. Head for Casa Pedrera right on the lake at Torremendo, off the San Miguel/Orihuela road. Great for family days out, best to book. Call Derek or Jenni on (0034) 696739048 or 660816620.
Boat Trip to Tabarca Island – TORREVIEJA
Another superb day out to the small island of Tabarca from the port in Torrevieja departing on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Crossing takes about 50 minutes, giving about 6 hours to explore the island, take a leisurely lunch or picnic on the beach. Some great fish restaurants on the front.
