Whether this proves to be a help or a hindrance to the already struggling bars remains to be seen. Certainly it´s a big blow for the little Spanish bars and personally I can´t see how they will enforce the ban in some of the remoter areas but thats another story. Here on the Costas, with a huge dependency on the tourist trade it will probably prove to be a blessing. In the UK and Northern Europe the majority of adults don´t smoke and they for sure will welcome the fog-free environment now offered by bars, cafes and especially restaurants.

For the anti-brigade this is great news – there are certainly those who have been put off coming to Spain and those who don´t go out when they are here because of the smoky bars etc. Hopefully now they will return here and try some of the excellent establishments on offer.  For those who still want to smoke (and initial studies reveal hardly anyone will be giving it up as a result of the ban) the climate softens the blow, since its warm enough to sit outside for the majority of the year.

For now though we are already seeing huddles of smokers outside the bars without terraces and no-one inside. That will change as time goes on and everyone gets used to the idea. Or will it? The Spanish are an obstinate lot and I´m sure there will be a few rumpuses in the coming months!

Recently I came across a statement from a company I worked for over 20 years ago. I had long forgotten that when I left the job I had a pension fund that was frozen until I was 60. The statement projected my pension would pay out around 1,200gbp per year. Wow! Hardly life-changing….I had heard rumours that one could access these funds now through a scheme called QROPS so, being a bit skint, I took it to a financial advisor here to see what he could do.

If you are a holder of such a pension you need to talk to our expert personally who can advise the best course of action for your circumstances.

Apparently RyanAir has the huff because the Murcian Tourist Board “has failed to promote the area” to UK tourists. Personally I think it has more to do with the fact that AirNostrum, a Spanish airline, has been given a nice chunk of promotional money which O´Leary thinks should rightfully have gone to his company, seeing as RyanAir brings 50% of total traffic through Murcia airport. Maybe he has a point but it is the travelling public who will suffer most.

No announcement has been made as to whether the flights will be brought back for next summer.

UPDATE – 15 AUGUST 2010

Now Air Berlin has joined the party announcing it will discontinue flights to Palma de Mallorca from April next year.  Damn and blast…how will I get my Mallorca fix now???

They also cite Murcia Tourist Board for failure to promote the area in Germany, though I fail to see what that has that got to do with flights from Murcia to Mallorca…..Is O´Leary taking his friends home too?

First floor town centre apartment in a popular block walking distance from everything the village has to offer. Perfect budget base for winter stayovers or longer term rental for singles, couples or small families

Apartment comprises lounge/diner, 2 bedrooms, full bathroom and separate, fully equipped kitchen. Outside there is a small balcony, private rooftop solarium and underground parking. Comfortably furnished throughout. Lift and entryphone.

We arrived with plenty of time to spare so took advantage of the excellent practice facilities, were a pyramid of Callaway balls awaited at each position on the driving range, and on the first tee we were presented with named bag badges, nice touches. And so off we went, the  course wanders through the forest with some open holes, interesting par 3´s, a couple of pictureque lakes and a monster 600yard par 5.

The course is built away from housing unlike most courses here where buildings line the fairways, so you get the impression of being back in the English countryside at times.  Despite a first-hole fiasco, we managed a decent round with several of us scoring in the 30´s. Looking at the card afterwards we all seemed to do better on the back nine indicating this is slightly easier than the front. The greens are fast and the ball lands and sticks like it should, on occasions you need to think your way as some of the approaches are quite narrow.

On the whole a very enjoyable course, which seems to be built and run properly. Its not overly long playing-wise but the distances from green to tee make a buggy essential rather than optional. Tee times are 12 minutes apart so no queueing, the staff couldn´t be more helpful and the clubhouse facilities are top quality. The course costs a little more to play than the average around here but this is a superior course and there are some decent summer deals so we recommend you give it a try soon.

Get your bucket and spades out because we have some great Blue Flag beaches right here on our doorstep. In Orihuela Costa are Flamenca Beach, Cala Capitan, Cabo Roig, Campoamor, Barranco Rubio and Mil Palmeras. In Torrevieja Los Naufragos and Cala Pietras get the nod and either side there are 3 beaches in Guardamar and 3 more in the Pilar de Horadada area. Marina International and the RCN Marina, both in Torrevieja, are accreditted along with Cabo Roig marina. Great news for these beaches and indeed, the area as a whole….the Town Halls work very hard to achieve the distinction of these awards and the criteria is stiff.

Which brings me to thinking; I bet there are many beaches who probably just missed out on some minor point and I also know there are many superb coves and natural dune areas hereabouts, too small to be classified as beaches but which are little gems in their own right. Maybe they could have two classifications, Blue and, I don´t know, green? Or light blue? Or would that de-value the kudos attached to the Blue Flag? Whatever….just get out and explore!!

APRIL 19th -22nd AND 26th – 29th – TORREVIEJA – Spring Tapas Trail – Bi-annual event where various cafes and bars offer different tapas every day with a drink for 2€ a pop. Good fun and a great way to discover some hidden gems in the smaller streets of Torry. SEPTEMBER 21st to 30th 2012- ROMANS AND CARTHAGINIANS – CARTAGENA – So-o-o worth a visit on any day, this is a huge event which re-enacts the Roman conquest of Cartagena in 209AD. The Romans camp outside of town for the durat ion where there are markets stalls, taverns and tradesmen typical of the time. Fanstastic costumes, with hundreds of participants, daily parades and battle enactments throughout the fiesta. SEPTEMBER 21st  to OCTOBER 3rd – SAN MIGUEL FIESTAS – Annual bonanza in honour of the town´s Patron Saint San Miguel. Inaugural open air all-night disco with live bands and concerts on most nights throughout the fiestas, either in the fairground or in the Plaza de la Libertad. Events and parades include Float and Fancy Dress Parade, Tapas Trail, Crazy Car Races, Horse Show, Paella Gigante and the grand Town Procession on the last Saturday which ends with a huge firework display and street party.  The locals are very happy to include “foreigners” in their jollies so get up there and enjoy the fun.

FEBRUARY 3rd to 5th – ORIHUELA ME DIEVAL MARKET – If you go to only one Medieval Market make it this one, its the biggest and also the best around in our opinion. Its held in the old town so you can really believe yo u have stepped back in time as you stroll the narrow streets amongst falconers, pedlars and minstrels (not the chocolate variety) and a myriad of food and craft stalls hawking their wares. Watch the bakers, chocolate-makers, brewers and apothocaries producing their wares in the old fashioned way and marvel at the human pyramid builders, a mad local tradition often reaching 5 or 6 layers.  Dance, music and falconry demos tak e place all day on the stage in the square.

FEBRUARY 11th to MARCH 5th – TORREVIEJA CARNIVAL – Parades and party nights in true Rio style, full programme available from town halls and tourist offices. The parades on 27th Feb at 4pm and 5th March at 10pm,  are particularly spectacular and well worth seeing with huge floats and stunning costume dancers.

MAY 2nd – CARAVACA de la CRUZ – Caballos de Vino (Wine Horse festival)/ Moors and Christians – You gotta get up early for this one but its well worth the effort. The fun starts with the highly decorated wine horses parade and races through the streets. In the afternoon the Holy Cross is taken in procession from the Sanctuary to the Parish of San Salvador and Moors & Christians re-enact battles and scenes from historic events. Parking can be a bit of a pain so probably its best to do this on a coach trip. Cheap as chips at 12€ and you can have a drink or three! MARCH 15th to 19th 2012 – FALLAS WEEK, VALENCIA – Very noisy and sleepless week incorprating a flower festival, parades, massive bonfires with over 700 floats and ninots (effigies), all of which goes up in smoke at midnight on the last day with deafening mascletas (gunpowder) & fireworks all week. Spain´s biggest, loudest, longest and craziest party – a bucket-list event!!

MARCH 17th – ST PATRICK´S DAY  – VARIOUS LOCATIONS – Paddy´s Day is celebrated all over the area by ex-pats and locals alike. Events planned this year include the annual 3-day event in Playa Flamenca with outdoor bars, market stalls, live bands and dance shows, Irish dancing and music all day from local radio station, Excite FM. New location in front of Lidl on the N332. On 17th March there is also a parade and all-day party on the strip at Cabo Roig. Not to be out-done the Spanish village of Los Montesinos hosts a 2-day St Patrick´s Fiesta on 16th and 17th March on the sports pitch near the Town Hall.

JUNE 24th – FIESTA DE SAN JUAN, ALICANTE – Carnaval parades and the burni ng of the Hogeras to end a week of fireworks and all-night partying.

JULY 2nd to JULY 31st – SAN JAVIER JAZZ FESTIVAL - An annual event featuring open-air concerts with a top notch bill of international singers and musicians. A must-do for jazz, blues, hip-hop and soul music lovers.

JULY 31st – BEACH PARTY – TORREVIEJA – At the Playa Acequion, live bands all day and into the night. Starts around midday.

Francisco Camps, the President of Valencia region travelled to the USA to be told the good news by Bill Gates himself and said he hoped Torrevieja will become the new reference centre in Europe for innovations in health. Representatives from Microsoft and various European Health organisations will be in town next month to meet with local officials to get the project under way.

Way to go guys! Wonder if they can do anything innovative with the food??
