Los Montesinos

Los Montesinos is a great base for relaxing or adventure holidays and is also growing in popularity with people relocating from UK and Europe.

Situated slightly inland between Torrevieja and Guardamar, between the salt lakes, its an ideal location for those looking for a Spanish lifestyle but with all the tourist services, amenities and a string of blue flag beaches just 10 minutes away by car. There´s a good variety of  bars, restaurants and shops within the town and lots to explore in the surrounding villages. The motorway is only minutes away giving easy access to international airports and the exciting cities of Alicante, Murcia and Cartagena, all within an hours drive.

The town is still predominantly Spanish but is developing a more cosmopolitan feel with the influx of ex-pats to the urbanisations on the outskirts of town such as La Herrada and Montesol. Life revolves around the recently renovated town square, the high street and the narrow, well-kept streets behind it where locals gather to gossip on the pavements or outside the cafe bars. On Herrada itself there is a large supermarket and a few cafe bars and shops if you can´t face the 15 minute walk into town.  It goes without saying that there of plenty of Fiesta Days to be celebrated, most notably the Patronal Fiestas at the beginning of October, the Carnival in January and Segregation Day on 30th July when the locals celebrate gaining their independence as a municipality in1990.

The nearest beaches la mata beachat Guardamar/La Mata and Torrevieja have something for everyone, whether you like pristine sand or the more natural dunes and pine trees. Off season its easy to find an isolated stretch to while away the day and finish that book.  Torrevieja is an established resort town where you will find modern shopping centres, cinemas, water park, marinas and, of course, more beaches…For sporty types, there are more than 20 golf courses within an hours drive, the nearest being La Finca, a four-star resort only 5 minutes away. Watersports are available in Torrevieja or on the shores of the Mar Menor and fun activities such as go-karting, quad biking, horse-riding and cycling are available nearby. For shoppers and browsers the street market takes place behind the Town Hall on Friday afternoons from around 4pm.

For explorers there are a host of small Spanish towns and villages dotted along the banks of the River Segura and well worth a visit, especially on market days and during the many  fiestas. Try San Miguel, Rojales, Algorfa and Almoradi for starters but there are many more.

EATING AND DRINKING IN LOS MONTESINOS

There´s a good variety of eateries in the town ranging from tiny Spanish tapas barsrosaforweb to classy international restaurants. The town square is a great place to while away a morning people-watching or catching up with the news, its surrounded by cafe bars, Carls Bar is very popular with Brits serving decent, traditionally English fare although we prefer Bar Rosa, just around the corner which attracts a great mix of Spanish and other nationalities. For sports fans there is El Mundo just next door.

For American-style dining there´s El Paso on the high street serving burgers, pizzas, ribs, steaks etc and herraduraforwebfor that special night out  we highly recommend La Herradura (The Horseshoe) just outside town on the Torrevieja road, a beautifully restored farmhouse with lots of small rooms around a central open patio and a pretty outdoor terrace where they have regular live music and Flamenco dancing on Fridays. Best to book if you want a table outside in the busy season (966 721 078). Speciality fish dishes are excellent but expensive, if you´re on a budget stick to the Menu del Noche and you´ll not go far wrong. Its also open as a museum on Wednesday mornings and there´s an Antiques Fair in the car park on Saturday mornings if you just want to poke around for a bargain.

Or why not try some authentic Spanish cooking at home? The town has recently published a book of traditional recipes featuring people from Montesinos, available to buy at the Town Hall. Yummy!
